Dissociation is a set of physical and behavioral adaptations ('skills') that human beings have developed because they can help us to survive extreme events A combination of genetics and trauma or extreme stress can cause an individual to dissociate later in life, leading to dissociative disorders such as depersonalization/derealization disorder or dissociative amnesia or to a trauma- and stress-related disorder, most notably posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Dissociation was described as symptoms rather than in terms of the dissociative syndromes. A prominent theme was that dissociation is hard to conceptualize, assess and treat, diagnoserna PTSD (posttraumatiskt stressyndrom), akut stressyndrom, BPD/IP dissociation, its evolution to PTSD and the concomitant early onset demential syndrome. Methods and Findings: The patient, a woman, victim of urban violence, experienced peritraumatic dissociation; she was diagnosed with ASD and later developed PTSD and concomitant EOD, the latter being an unexpected and devastating outcome.
